Essential Vocabulary

🔤 Vocab Notes

Master the key words from every required reading book: definitions, examples, and a practice quiz. Pick a grade level to get started.

Every word list on this page is pulled straight from a book on a required reading list, not from a generic vocabulary textbook. That distinction matters: a word only earns a spot here if it actually shows up in the novel a student is being tested on that week or in the essay prompts built around it, which means the ten minutes spent on any one set translates directly into a specific grade rather than general vocabulary building.

Each set follows the same four-part format regardless of grade level: a clear definition, a real quote from the book showing the word in context, a short comparison with words that are commonly confused with it, and a quiz to check retention before the exam. The grade level changes how that format is written, not what it includes. An Elementary set defines a word in plain, everyday language a student meeting it for the first time already understands, while a High School or AP set leans into the nuance colleges and standardized tests actually check, including words that look similar but mean something different in context.

Most sets also come with a short companion video that walks through the same ten words out loud, which helps students who study better by hearing a word used in a sentence than by reading a definition on a page. The video and the written set always cover the exact same words, so students can use either one, or both, depending on how they study best.

Choose a category below to get started, sets are organized by grade level so you can jump straight to the book your student is reading. Looking for SAT-specific vocabulary and practice? The SAT Vocab series and matching Passage Practice sets now live on their own Digital SAT hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do these words come from?

Every word on this page comes from an actual required-reading book or the essay prompts built around it, not a generic vocabulary list. If a word does not appear in a book on a grade-level reading list, it does not get a set here.

Do I need to watch the companion video for every set?

No. The video and the written set always cover the exact same ten words, so it comes down to whether you or your student learns better by reading a definition or hearing the word used out loud. Most sets include one, but it is optional.
